the spice of life

i was up in milwaukee a couple weeks ago, & on our way to the biggest event on the chinese calander, dg threw on a reggae version of "woman of the ghetto" that reminded me (not that i should need to be reminded) just how fantastic marlena shaw's original recording & subsequent album, the spice of life, are...recorded for chicago's cadet label in 1969, the album showcases shaw's penchant for soul, jazz, funk & even pop music, while powerful arrangements from richard evans & charles stepney give her the opportunity to shine...great, great stuff.

California Soul is bangin'. I have to admit that I came to know it from the sample off of Gang Starr's first lp. Classic stuff.
