you've really got a hold on me

i thought i'd follow up dg's latest post, which featured a great smokey robinson tune (happy birthday carrie), with another post featuring a great smokey robinson tune...after reading on pitchfork about the recent kcrw appearance by zooey deschanel (who's got an album with m. ward coming out in march under the moniker she and him), i headed over to the playlist, who are offering up a couple mp3's from the duo, including "sentimental heart" (a track we posted here last month) & a very nice cover of the miracles classic "you've really got a hold on me"...such a great song...with understandably, countless versions recorded over the years...here are just few of them.

download: the miracles - you've really got a hold on me
download: the beatles - you've really got a hold on me
download: the zombies - you've really got a hold on me/bring it on home to me
download: the small faces - you've really got a hold on me
download: percy sledge - you've really got a hold on me
download: the jackson 5 - you've really got a hold on me
download: laura nyro & labelle - you've really got a hold on me
download: she and him -you've really got a hold on me

related: i really like the zombies take up there in particular, & the way it segways into sam cooke's equally incredible "bring it on home to me"...coincidentally, the music slut posted a version she and him did of that song about a month ago...no idea where they got it.

download: sam cooke - bring it on home to me
download: she and him - bring it on home to me
.
update: looks like both the she and him tracks above were taken from a live performance they did on kexp back in june...& tkincher.com was up on it in july...well done.

The She and Him version wasn't live, it was from the new album. M. Ward wasn't there, just Zooey. Listen to the whole appearance here.

I think it is worth mentioning that Sam Cooke's 1961 recorded version of "Bring Ot on Home to Me" has Lou Rawls singing responses as an uncredited background singer. Rawls was a high school classmate of music giant Sam Cooke, and they sang together in the Teenage Kings of Harmony, a 50s gospel group.

thanks atom ten...i actually work only a couple blocks from dunbar high school in chicago, where they went together...it's pretty crazy that they both reached such great heights, even though rawls career was just beginning as cooke's was ending.

dc - I highly recommend Lou Rawls' first album, Stormy Monday [1962]. The track list of classic jazz-blues standards and the Les McCann Trio accompaniment is excellent. It's one of my favorite albums of all time. iTunes
