3614 jackson highway

when you awake posted an absolutely dynamite "country voodoo" mixtape last week, put together (with liner notes) by ethan miller of howlin' rain & comets on fire fame...it features a wide array of dark & dusty gems from artists like kris kristofferson, link wray, warren zevon, dr. john, elton john (on the killer mick ronson electric version of "madman across the water"), van morrison, lindsey buckingham, & cher, among others...the cher track in particular stood out to me, from her excellent 1969 album recorded with jerry wexler & tom dowd down in muscle shoals, & named after the studio's actual address, 3614 jackson highway...backed by players like eddie hinton, barry beckett, & david hood, cher is at her laid-back, sultry best as she roles through slinky numbers from stephen stills, dr. john, otis redding, dan penn, spooner oldham, & three songs from dylan's recently released nashville skyline...to be completely honest, i'm not very familiar with the rest of cher's catalog & i don't plan on exploring it any time soon, but this has to be one of her crowning achievements, a swampy soulful classic...definitely seek it out...oh, & don't forget to grab that mixtape.
