hbo's sunday night soundtrack

hbo's current sunday night lineup is kind of weak, but until the wire & curb your enthusiasm start up in the fall, we're left with john from cincinnati, entourage, flight of the conchords, & reruns of big love...the shows may not all be fantastic, but some of the music featured in them is...john from cincinnati has got some terrible acting, unpleasant characters, complicated dialogue & is getting even stranger after three episodes, but i'm still watching...i don't think i really like it, but i am kind of interested in it...last night's episode climaxed with a montage where john somehow made a few other characters who had either piercings, shrapnel, or transdermal implants in their bodies freak out & feel a painful burning in those areas...yeah, i didn't really get it either, but it was set to john lee hooker's "boogie chillun", which was cool (it might have been a cover or live version, but whatever)...i also really like the opening title sequence, which is set to joe strummer's "johnny appleseed", from the mescalero's 2001 album, global a go-go...
...entourage is pretty miserable, even johnny drama's shtick is starting to wear thin...not sure why i keep watching this show, but last night's credits rolled to this latyrx track off soulside's greatest bumps from 1999...nice...
...flight of the conchords, on the surface, seems like nothing more than a tenacious d rip off, but it's actually pretty hilarious & the best part of the night, thanks to the no frills production, funky music video interludes, brett & jermaine's straight delivery & some incredible supporting work from kristen schaal as their obsessive lone fan, mel...here's a track from the duo's 2002 folk the world tour live album...their new ep, the distant future, will be released on 08/07...
...big love actually airs on mondays, but i thought i'd include it in this post because i wanted to mention that david byrne is handling the music this season...very cool...the first episode of the season had him singing a version of "blue hawaii" at the episode's end & in last week's episode, which also featured a cameo from emmylou harris, i thought i noticed a slowed down instrumental version of "dream operator"...i'm probably wrong, but i really like that song, so i'm posting it anyways...i'm also posting the track that closed out last week's episode & also happens to be one of my buddy sean's favorite songs (although, i believe he prefers the lauryn hill version from sister act 2).
related: david byrne - live from austin, tx will be released on 07/24

David Byrne has been doing a fine job with the music supervision on Big Love
