in the city

i mentioned a couple weeks ago that david bromberg will be involved with the old town school of folk 50th anniversary concert here in december, but he's also playing the vic tonight...for a guy who's been pretty reclusive over the past twenty years, owning & operating a violin repair shop in wilmington, delaware & playing around town every once in a while, it's good to see him back in the game (he also released his first studio album since 1990 earlier this year)...often referred to as a musician's musician, & one of the first folkies to incorporate horns & electric guitars into his live shows, bromberg was also an in demand session player with famous fans & famous collaborators...he's backed by the grateful dead on the first two tracks below, the second of which is co-written by george harrison, & emmylou harris provides background vocals for the third (bob dylan play's harmonica on the track i posted a couple weeks ago)...he's playing tonight with the angel band (who, along with his wife, bromberg helped form through a wilmington cafe) & bluegrass heavyweights, peter rowan & tony rice...can't wait.

live music: a few of the other highlights in the miami of canada this weekend; tonight there's a record release party for the bon mots at the hideout, while the black lips are playing logan square auditorium...tomorrow, blitzen trapper (who've got a new ep out 10/09) are at schubas, alejandro escovado is at the abbey pub, & ryan adams is at the chicago theatre...hopefully ryan adams has his shit together.

related: newcity's best of chicago issue is out this week...good stuff.
.
related: local poet & indie rock show mainstay, thax douglas is the subject of a new documentary...the last time i saw him was at a centro-matic show at subterranean last year, which means either he's not making it to as many shows, i'm not making it to as many shows, or i'm not making it to as many shows on time...anyways, bromberg's grey beard kind of reminds me of him.
