on the jukebox

the details of cat power's much anticipated second covers album (well, it's almost a full covers album) were revealed yesterday & it appears that chan is staying close to the smooth memphis sound that worked so well for her on her last outing...all the song choices seem inspired, especially the ones from george jackson, james brown & lee clayton...she's also included a beautiful track off dylan's born again classic slow train coming to pair up with her own tribute to the man (should be pretty easy to figure out which song that is) & two phenomenal tracks from legendary fame studios songwriters dan penn, chips morman, & spooner oldham...it all looks pretty good to me & here are a few of the original versions to tide you over till jukebox comes out in january...plus the recent cat power contribution to the hottest state soundtrack.

download: goerge jackson - aretha, sing one for me
download: james brown - lost someone
download: bob dylan - i believe in you
download: lee clayton - silver stallion
download: james carr - dark end of the street
download: janis joplin - a woman left lonely
.
related: cat power will also join an impressive lineup, which includes my morning jacket, the roots, & yo la tengo featuring buckwheat zydeco at new york's beacon theatre (fuckin' new yorkers) on 11/07 for i'm not there: the concert, a live companion to todd haynes' upcoming dylan biopic...you can stream chan's take on "stuck inside of mobile with the memphis blues again", from the film's ambitious soundtrack, as well as offerings from jim james & sufjan stevens here.
.
update: you can also hear tweedy's version of "simple twist of fate" here.

Hey, Jens Lekman was so solid. I was really surprised of how much he was able to take from his album and put it into the live setting. So good.
