i should have known better when i said the opening night of wilco's five night chicago residency would be hard to top, because last night was absolutely incredible, with an extended guest appearance from andrew bird, a ton of rousing country rock numbers from the band's mid-nineties heyday, & almost everyone in attendance singing along all night...a few highlights; stiratt's only lead vocal in the group's catalog played even better live than i could have imagined ("that was long overdue john" -tweedy), tweedy trying to keep up with andrew bird's whistling on "red-eyed blue", glen's
animalesque outbreaks during "via chicago", pretty much the entire second set/first encore ("we're gonna take a short break now, you know, like the dead" -tweedy), the crowd singing along to the president's of the united states of america's "peaches" with the house lights up before the band came out for a true encore (forgot how much i liked that song), & nels & pat's back & forth during "hoodoo voodoo" to end the night...here's the
setlist.
