friday funk & soul

norman whitfield, r.i.p.

acid tongue

jenny lewis's solo debut, rabbit fur coat, recorded with the watson twins, was a beautiful, low-key, singer-songwriter affair rooted in the early nashville sound & somewhat reminiscent of patsy cline...it was also one of the best albums of 2006...& while her follow-up, which will be available next week, doesn't quite tug at the heartstrings the way the first one did, it is at times a much more joyful & upbeat record, with a loose, communal feel that only adds to it's appeal...among the albums guests are m. ward, zooey deschanel, chris robinson & elvis costello; none of whom will be appearing with jenny tonight at the epiphany church...but that doesn't mean the show won't still be great...see you there.

Come Early Dance Late

Chicago - do yourself a favor and get to The Abbey Pub tonight. Savor the goodness of Floss and Friends all while enjoying a special on tallboys of Pabst Blue Ribbon. Remember, nature's choicest products are what provide that prized flavor. Ummm. See you there.

Related: Well maybe not related, but sort of since I can't think of Matt + Kim without thinking of the Flosstradamus remix of Yeah Yeah. Grab the new Matt + Kim "Good Old Fashioned Nightmare" . Gracias as always to the fine folks at RCRDLBL
bringing the non-stop flavor.

are the cubs the replacements of baseball?

craig finn tackled that question & more when he dropped by espn.com yesterday to wax poetic about his beloved twins...he also claimed to have a soft spot for the brewers, which i guess is what happens when you hang around with cheeseheads like tad...as far as the cubs go, i think it might be a little early to start comparing them to famously self-destructive rock bands...but then again, the replacements did break up on stage in chicago.

brotherman!

leave it to numero group to unearth an incredible soundtrack to an unmade film from an obscure chicago soul group thirty plus years after the initial unfinished recording session...i find it absolutely remarkable that something this good has stayed buried for so long...do yourself a favor & check out soul sides for a deeper look at the story behind the album, as well as couple other great tracks & then pick up this lp...man, can you imagine if they had actually laid down horns for this thing?

unrelated: also from soul sides, a preview of the much anticipated upcoming album from menahan street band.

andrew bird at millennium park

what a performance from andrew bird last night at pritzker pavilion in millennium park...under the city lights, with a cool breeze, & a full but comfortable crowd, he occupied every last corner of the venue with little more than a violin & a whistle, before being joined by his band for an absolutely wonderful set that sounded particularly incredible surrounded by the chicago skyline...it was a great night, one that really makes you appreciate this city, & some of the things you might take for granted living here...even the ravinia junior crowd kept it at a whisper...& the two new songs he played were fantastic, so if anyone ripped the live broadcast off of wxrt, please, i'd love to hear it...here's one he played early on.
