the heartbreak kids

the flaming lips have seemingly been the go to band for movie soundtracks lately, having submitted new tracks to both spiderman 3 & good luck, chuck in the past year...but neither of those songs have really left a lasting impression, at least on me...so i was very happy when i heard the mexican flavorings of "the tale of the horny toad" & "maybe i'm not the one" from the heartbreak kid & dug them both, especially the latter...the rest of the soundtrack is a mixed bag, with a couple great tunes (bowie), but nothing else that hasn't been previously released elsewhere...kind of like the farrelly brothers recent work; a few laughs, but nothing too original...personally, kingpin remains one of the funniest movies of the past 15 years, & after walter sobchak, big ern mccracken is probably the greatest character from a 90s movie (or a bowling movie, for that matter), but nothing the brothers have done in the past decade really compares...& unfortunately, the heartbreak kid doesn't look much better; the reviews have been horrible & the fact that carlos mencia is in it doesn't help...plus, the original heartbreak kid never should have been remade in the first place & ben stiller should really be working on zoolander 2.

related: in other flaming lips news, the band is looking for a thousand fans to take part in an oklahoma city halloween parade & wayne's long delayed christmas on mars movie should finally hit the festival circuit in march...plus, take some time to listen to wayne & steven's visit on sound opinions from last month & once dg get's back from hawaii, he'll hopefully have a review of the las vegas poolside show he helped put together last month.

related: getting back to the farrelly brothers, they had a pretty good idea back in 2000 to have a bunch of current acts cover steely dan songs for the soundtrack to me, myself & irene, but unfortunately, the end result wasn't very good (it never is when smash mouth is involved)...luckily, it did give us this pretty straight forward gem from wilco.
