i'm not there

as you most likely know, the highly anticipated soundtrack to todd haynes upcoming bob dylan biopic, i'm not there, was released today featuring 29 musicians tackling 33 songs from one of the most influential artists of the past 50 years...& it's pretty wonderful...not surprisingly, some of my favorite tracks happen to be from some of my favorite artists, like jim james, jeff tweedy, stephen malkmus & the hold steady, but pretty much everyone does a stellar job (i even kind of dig sufjan's version of "ring them bells" that seems to be getting panned)...of course, all those involved benefited greatly from the source material, as dylan's work has a history of lending itself well to other's interpretations (hendrix, the byrds, etc.), but even the the more faithful takes from the likes of mason jennings, john doe, & especially malkmus, whom i imagine had less room to stretch as their tracks had to be dubbed into the actor's performances on screen, sound fantastic...& it's also been confirmed that just about everyone needs to work with calexico...i figured this would be one of the most enjoyable compilations of the year, but it's quite possible that it could be one of the most enjoyable albums of the year altogether...let's hope that the movie's as satisfying as the soundtrack.
