a vacation in the park

Missed this Sunday performance of King Khan because we were watching him so late the previous night at what he called 'poor mans pitchfork' at Bottom Lounge. Ok, well that and the fact that we had wicked Sparks-overs from a long day on Saturday.

Either way wherever it's at, bottom lounge or the Fest, King Khan is the real deal. Hands down the best live show i have seen all year. Check out all the 2008 Festival action at Pitchfork.tv. Don't miss the clip of Girltalk with Grizzly Bear. Wamp Wamp.

p-funk, live at hampton coliseum

what exactly has happened to geroge clinton? dude's resorted to playing frat filled bars like the cubby bear this past saturday, where even if the drunken crowd wanted to dance they probably couldn't unstick their feet from the beer soaked floor...i mean, at least he's not charging $60 a ticket like he has at the house of blues the past couple years, but it just seems like he's better than this...who knows, maybe he's not...either way, crack is whack...here's a great recording of a show from hampton, va, back in p-funk's heyday...enjoy.

let it ride

really digging this band, buffalo killers, right about now...out of cincinnati, there latest lp, let it ride, is a straight trip back to the halcyon days of the early-seventies...with unpolished production from the black key's dan aurbach, you can almost smell the sun soaked grass in their fuzzy groove-orientated rock that's both heavy & laid-back all at once...very good stuff, indeed.

friday funk & soul

it was announced a couple months ago, after years of speculation, that nona hendryx, patti labelle, & sarah dash had officially reunited in the studio to record their first album together since 1976...they also took to the stage earlier this month for the essence festival in new orleans, but there's no word if they squeezed into those old space children costumes or not...anyway, here are a couple from the allen toussaint produced 1974 classic, nightbirds.

a certain feeling

man, so many good albums have been released this month, it's almost hard to keep up...but here's one that should definitely not be overlooked...the sophomore effort from bodies of water finds the foursome building on their progressive gospel-pop sound to create these huge ever expanding orchestral arrangements that sound like they were recorded in an empty church or something...the mood is a little darker than their debut, but the songs are just as powerful...don't miss their live show either, they'll be at schubas on august 7th with port o'brien.

dog days

it's been a bit of a slow week around here...but whatever, it's the middle of the summer, it's hot outside, the cubs have let the brewers creep within a game of the lead in the nl central, & sometimes you just get into a little slump...plus, i really haven't been listening to anything besides the new one from dr. dog all week...sure, it's been in the rotation for about a month now, but for some reason it seems to have come on super strong in the past couple days...while the dog too often get pegged as nothing more than a throwback to the americana-steeped pop of late sixties masters like the band or the beatles, they appear to have truly found their own voice on fate...granted, it's a somewhat nostalgic voice, but it's definitely theirs, & the album is fantastic...unfortunately, toby "tables" leaman, one of the two leads, has injured his voice & the group had to postpone their two nyc shows this week...here's hoping he heals up for the post-palooza gig at schubas next friday.

cute outfits

nice shot

do yourself a favor & browse through the treasure trove of photos over at morrison hotel gallery...wow.

the offender meets the pretender

this is a pretty well known bootleg, recorded in vrpo studios in hilversum, holland back in december of 1976...what's interesting is that even though jackson browne was arguably at the height of his fame, the dutch radio host & those in attendance seem more interested in warren zevon, who had only just released his self-titled second album & was on his first solo tour as browne's "special guest"...to be honest, i probably would have been more excited to see him as well, nothing against jackson browne, it's just a matter of preference...what's equally cool though, is how invested browne seems in sharing the spotlight & showcasing the work of his good friend...check it out.

"our songs are sing along songs"

the hold steady don't really have many casual fans, you're either all in or you probably haven't spent enough time with their music (& definitely haven't seen them live)...the only problem with being all in though, is that sometimes you tend to get a little too attached to the songs, the ones that you've sung along to countless times, & when new ones come along it might be kind of hard to accept them as easily as the old favorites...at least that's how i felt the first couple times i listened to stay positive, which officially came out earlier this week...while there were certain tracks that immediately struck a chord, i couldn't help sizing up almost everything on the album to the band's previous work, & was actually sort of let down...but for some reason, when i came back to it a few days later, i was completely blown away...every song sounded better, tracks i had dismissed as weak retreads like "one for the cutters" & "yeah sapphire" had taken on new life, while standouts like the title track, "constructive summer", & "lord, i'm discouraged", now sounded like absolute classics...i've been playing this album into the ground for about a month now, & it seems to get better & better, the songs have all resonated & i'm starting to get pretty attached to them...& when the band takes the stage at union park tomorrow evening, you can bet i'll be there...singing along.

friday funk & soul

i know absolutely nothing about this song...except that it's awesome.

dave mason

any of you catch dave mason on conan a couple nights ago, performing "feelin' alright" with joe cocker & his band?...it was pretty cool to see him show up so randomly like that, but i couldn't help feeling a little bad that his career never took off the same way some of his early contemporaries did...after the dude left traffic in 1969 & fell in with the leon russell/delaney & bonnie crew, he was at the top of his game...he was turning up on albums from the stones & george harrison, & was all set to join derek & the dominos, when he decided to go into the studio & record his solo debut, alone together, instead, which in my opinion is one of the finest all around rock albums of the seventies...with a ridiculous array of musicians in tow, including leon russell, carl radle, jim capaldi, delany & bonnie bramlett, & even eric clapton on a couple tracks, it's still the bouncy folk-rock melodies of mason's well-crafted songs, every one of them fantastic, that carry the album (well, that & clapton's solo at the end of "look at you look at me")...mason released a few more really good solo albums, & had a couple soft rock hits near the end of the decade, but then he kind of disappeared in the eighties...now he tours the country, playing small festivals, like the one tonight in itasca (a suburb of chicago)...maybe not what he expected back in 1970, but at least he's still playing...& why not when he's got songs like these to play.

related: those soft rock hits he had at the end of the decade, by the way, were very well deserved...mason's biggest commercial success came in 1977, with these breezy gems off let it flow...oh yeah.

blitzen trapper - furr

this inspired, low-key folk number is the title track to blitzen trapper's new record, which will be available in september...it's really good, & a big leap for a band that already stepped up with a few twangy country flavored tunes off last year's wild mountain nation...but something tells me the feedback filled freakouts won't be going away just yet.

recapturing zz top

there was some interesting news from billboard last week, that zz top has signed with american recordings & will head into the studio with rick rubin in hopes of recapturing some of their early-seventies glory...it's hard not to be a little skeptical, especially after the trio has spent the past twenty years living off the slick grooves, canned drums, & cheesy (though admittedly awesome) music videos of their eighties heyday (turning out a dynamite performance in back to the future part 3 in the process, i might add)...still, it would be pretty cool if rubin could strip away all that glossy polish that's built up over the years, & turn out a dirty, bare bones, blues-rock record...kind of like the group's criminally underrated first album, which was recorded almost forty years ago, before the fully grown beards & cheap sunglasses, when zz top actually was just a lil' ol' band from texas...even better, why not just rerelease that record with the special treatment that tres hombres got from rhino a couple years ago...as of now, the only way to hear the original mix is on vinyl, so here are a couple rips.

the donkeys - walk through a cloud

i'm really digging this little laid-back new track from the donkeys, which believe it or not, sounds a bit tighter than those loose, lazy numbers off their equally impressive self-titled 2006 debut...look for the forthcoming album, living on the other side, to drop september 9th.

modern guilt

my expectations got pretty high for this new beck record after the exceptionally haunting lead single "chemtrails" surfaced a little over a month ago, & while nothing else on modern guilt quite reaches the epic proportions of that particular track, i'm really digging the album as a whole...unlike some, i was actually a fan of 2005's guero when it came out (although it hardly compared to previous efforts like midnite vultures or mutations), but i really haven't had the urge to revisit it since, & i only got through 2006's the information a handful of times before tossing it aside as well...while it's hard to say if this new one will have the staying power of beck's best work, the dark, serious undertones & raspy, analog beats (courtesy of danger mouse) have kept me coming back over & over again all week & the quick run time has made it even easier to hit repeat...all in all, i guess it's just nice to feel excited about beck again.

related: this isn't the first time beck has disguised downtrodden lyrics with catchy beats...check out this great track, which was up on beck.com back in november of 2005.

Gary Wilson

I've heard alot about the Gary Wilson film from a number of different people over the years and looks like it's now available on a proper DVD release. Succinct summary blurb below from the one and only Atomic Records.

You Think You All Know Me: The Gary Wilson Story DVD+CD (Plexifilm)

Championed by the likes of Beck and Matt Groening and obsessed over by record collectors, Gary Wilson's album, You Think You Really Know Me, is widely considered one of the most unique and personal musical statements of the 1970s. Director Michael Wolk set out to learn more about the man behind this esoteric record, only to find that he had all but vanished shortly after its original release. You Think You Really Know Me - The Gary Wilson Story is a look at the fascinating yet bittersweet life of a musician and artist well ahead of his time and ripe for rediscovery.
